Summary

The LCMS series of surveys in Zambia were originally based on the Priority Surveys of 1991 and 1993. While the Priority Surveys were aimed at evaluating structural adjustment policies, the LCMS series focused on providing indicators of living conditions and poverty.

The 1998 LCMS II was the second in the series. All districts of Zambia were included in the survey. The sampling frame included 4,160 census supervisory areas (CSAs). The CSAs were divided into 13,043 standard enumeration areas (SEAs). From that frame, a sample of 821 SEAs was selected for the survey that included 500 rural and 321 urban SEAs. Overall, 8,487 rural and 8,223 urban households were selected as the sample, which represented 0.9% of all Zambia households.

One questionnaire was used to collect information about the household and individuals within the household. The poverty estimates are not comparable across all surveys in this series.
