The five states - Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu - were chosen based on their representation of different regions of India. The verbal autopsy instrument had five components used to ascertain information about infant, child, adult, and maternal mortality. Causes of death were determined according to ICD-10 codes and assigned by physicians. Tabulations display data by age group, region, and cause group.
