Data for the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries are gathered annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and individual states from various sources such as death certificates, news accounts, workers’ compensation reports, and Federal and State agency administrative records. Through these sources, detailed information is compiled on fatal occupational injuries in the country and each individual state. The types of fatalities presented in the tables are transportation incidents, assaults and violent acts, contact with objects and equipment, falls, exposure to harmful substances or environment, and fires and explosions. Data are organized in the tables by event, industry, sector, goods and services, occupation, and worker characteristics including age and sex.
