Summary

The purpose of this survey was to collect a range of information on households and communities in order to develop indicators on poverty in Malawi. This survey also sought to gather data that aided in the development of policies around health, education, migration, employment, and wellbeing.

The data were collected through various questionnaires. Households were interviewed from November 1997 through October 1998 on topics including demographic characteristics, fertility, agricultural activities, food consumption, and household spending. Height and weight were recorded for children. Each household also maintained a 28-day expenditure diary. The sample size for the household section of this survey was 12,960 households.

From November 1998 through January 1999, the interviewers went back through the same household sample areas and used community questionnaires to gather information from community leaders. Leaders in urban and rural communities were interviewed.
