Summary

The 2010 Afghanistan Special Demographic Health Survey collected data on mortality and causes of death, specifically focused on maternal mortality. The survey also collected information on causes and determinants of mortality for adults, child, and infants by age, sex, and wealth status. The sample of 22,351 women was drawn from a nationally representative sample of 24,032 households. The survey included four questionnaires:

  • A household questionnaire used in all sample households.
  • Each identified death that occurred in selected households was followed with one of three verbal autopsy questionnaires, depending on the age of death: 0-28 days, 29 days to 11 years, and 12 years and above.
  • A woman's questionnaire administered to all women ages 12 to 49.
  • A cluster level questionnaire gathered information from the head of the village or another knowledgeable informant.
