Summary

Censuses provide population numbers, household or family size and composition, and information on sex and age distribution. They often include other demographic, economic, and health-related topics as well. The 2011 France Population and Housing Census was a 'rolling' census conducted in the 2009-2013 cycle, where data was collected via direct enumeration every January and February each year. The sample design consists of one fifth of communes under 10,000 population (taken in their entirety), 8% of housing units sampled from communes of 10,000 or more population. Microdata are a 40% sample of persons in communes over 10,000 and a 25% sample for smaller communes. Weights are designed to describe the population in the median year of the dataset, 2011. A 31% sample fraction of households from the census (20,541,337 individuals) is available through IPUMS International at the University of Minnesota. Refer to the IPUMS website for guidelines on citing database versions.
