Summary 

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 52nd Round (July 1995 to June 1996) included surveys of household consumer expenditure, participation in education, and health care and the aged.

Sample sizes were as follows: 28,834 and 19,734 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey; 43,076 rural and 29,807 urban for the education survey; and 71,284 rural and 49,658 urban for the health care survey. The surveys were representative at national and state levels, but select areas were excluded due to geographic remoteness.

Primary topics covered included maternal and child health care services, morbidity and associated health care treatments, aged persons, participation in education, and household consumer expenditure.
