In 1985, it covered 1,080 villages in 21 states and 3 union territories. In each village, staff members of primary health centers regularly collected information on births and deaths, including symptoms. Once deaths were registered and probable causes of death were assigned, the data were sent to a state agency for consolidation. The SCD was merged with the Sample Registration System (SRS) in 1999. Some libraries may be able to procure the report for this survey through the interlibrary loan system.
