Summary

The International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems (ICBDMS--later Surveillance and Research, ICBDSR) is a nongovernmental organization. Around 40 registries submitted data on 39 congenital anomalies for the 2003 report. Data range from subnational to multicountry; not every organization's data are included in every table.

The report includes data on fetal exposure to prescription drugs and malformation; multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) and teratogens; prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome (including maternal age and percentage of terminations in participating countries); prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defects; information on monitoring systems in varying countries; and the number of cases and rates of selected birth defects among live births, stillbirths, and abortions from most registries' data. This selection may change from year to year.

See individual registry records linked through the ICBDSR system record for more granular information on coverage.
