The NHS included several extra components beyond the MICS questionnaires on maternal and child health, including blood tests for serum retinol (Vitamin A deficiency) and malaria, urine tests for iodine deficiency, vision exams, and examinations of goiters by palpatation and ultrasound. Data collection for the MICS portion of the survey ended in April 2000, but NHS data collection continued with rounds in July and November. The NHS interviewed 3,635 women between the ages of 15-49, and 5,133 children under the age of 5.
