Summary

The 2005 South Africa National Food Consumption Survey: Fortification Baseline (NFCS-FB) assessed the anthropometric and micronutrient status of children, 1-9 years old, and women of reproductive age, 16-35 years old. The survey aimed to inform the development of nutrition education and promotion. Data were collected through a screening tool and five questionnaires: a sociodemographic questionnaire (SDQ), a knowledge, attitude, and beliefs questionnaire (KABQ), a food procurement questionnaire (FPQ), a household food inventory questionnaire (HFIQ), and a hunger scale questionnaire (HSQ). Anthropometric measurements were recorded for all participants. There were also questions about brand name foods that are fortified, and vitamin A testing of maize meal was conducted.
