Summary

The Saving Mothers Report provides numbers and causes of maternal deaths in South Africa, as well as data on associated risk factors, including HIV infection. It covers 4,867 maternal deaths reported from 2008 to 2010. Most of these reported deaths occurred at health facilities; only a small percentage were recorded as home deaths.

Tables in this report show underlying causes of death by age group and primary causes of death by province. It also provides numbers of maternal deaths and mortality rates by district. In addition, this report contains tabulations on causes of death for 2002 to 2007. The Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) system began in South Africa in 1997. This is the fifth published report on CEMD since 1999.
