Summary 

The Great Britain Mental Health of Children and Adolescents Survey 1999 was the sixth major survey of psychiatric morbidity to be carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and it was the first to evaluate the extent of childhood psychiatric disorders. The survey was intended to produce prevalence rates for emotional disorders, hyperactivity, and conduct disorders, based on ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria.

The surveyed population consisted of children and adolescents ages 5-15 living in private households in England, Scotland, and Wales. Out of a sample of 14,250 children, a total of 10,438 were successfully interviewed. In addition, questionnaires were also completed by 10,405 parents and 8,382 teachers. 

Topics covered included: household characteristics, child health status, health service use and provision, mental health symptoms, and the impact of children's mental health problems on others.
