Summary

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The 1998 sample consisted of 38,209 interviewed households, yielding 98,785 persons in 38,773 families.

The questionnaires included in the basic module of the 1998 NHIS cover a wide variety of topics, such as household composition, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations. The 1998 NHIS also included three topical modules covering the health behaviors of both adults and children: the pregnancy and smoking module, the adult preventative module, and the child preventative module.
