Summary 

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a primary source of information on the health of the population of the United States. The NHIS is a cross-sectional household interview survey that is fielded continuously throughout the year. The interviewed sample for the 2002 NHIS consisted of 36,161 households, yielding 93,386 persons in 36,831 families.

The 2002 NHIS covered a wide variety of topics, such as family composition, socio-demographic characteristics, injuries, health care access and utilization, health insurance, income and assets, conditions, health behaviors, physical activity, and immunizations. The survey included supplement sections covering topics such as alternative medicine, hearing, vision, arthritis, asthma, mental health of children, assistive technologies and environmental barriers, and exposure to lead paint.
