Summary 

The National Survey of Children Wtih Special Health Care Needs is conducted by the National Center of Health Statistics at the CDC under the direction and sponsorship of the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The survey is conducted by telephone to samples of both landline and cell-phone numbers, and results are weighted to represent children ages 0-17 who are classified as having one or more special health care needs. The 2009-2010 survey design was cross-sectional, with stratification by state and sample type, and clustering of children within households. A parent or guardian with knowledge of the health and health care of the children in each household acted as the respondent. The 2009-2010 survey introduced a diagnosis question for all 20 ADHD-related conditions. A total of 372,698 children were screened, with a response rate of 43.7% for the landline sample, 15.2% for the cell-phone sample, and 25.5% for the combined sample overall.
