Summary 

The first German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) took place in 2003-2006. Comprehensive health data were collected from a sample of 17,641 children and adolescents under the age of 18 through surveys, physical examinations and laboratory tests. The baseline survey collected information on participants' health status, health behaviors, living conditions, risk factor exposure, and health care use. 

The baseline survey defined a cohort of children and adults who have since been invited to participate in subsequent follow-ups into adulthood. A second wave of KiGGS took place in 2009-2012 and a third began collecting data in 2014.
