The Study on the Health of Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) provides comprehensive data on the health of German children and adolescents up to the age of 17. The first data collection wave – the KiGGS baseline study – took place between 2003 and 2006 in the form of an interview and examination survey. The participants of the KiGGS baseline study (KiGGS cohort) forms the basis for the longitudinal inclusion in additional data collection waves. The first follow-up study called KiGGS Wave 1 began in 2009 and ended in 2012. In this wave, the data were predominantly obtained by means of telephone interviews. KiGGS Wave 2 started in September 2014 and ended in August 2017. In addition to the interviews, the study program also included physical examinations (including laboratory analysis of blood and urine samples) as well as tests.
Several off-shoot, KiGGS module specific follow-up surveys that utilize the KiGGS sample and respondents have been conducted. As of 2023, these include The Eating Study as a KiGGS Module (EsKiMo), and The Germany Environmental Survey (GerES).
